Applying for Social Security benefits does not have to be confusing.
There are several ways you can apply for disability benefits.
You can call your local office to schedule an appointment to complete the application over the phone. This means that you do not have to go to the local office and wait in line for hours. If you are not sure of your local office’s telephone number, you can call Social Security’s toll-free number (800-772-1213) and tell them that you want to file a claim.
You can go in person to your local Social Security office. However, this can mean a long wait, depending on how busy your local office is.
You can apply online at Social Security’s website if you are eligible for Title II benefits.
